Coffee Tea? 'What Is It' you ask...
Some people call it White Coffee, but back when I thought I had invented in my backyard I called it Coffee Tea. Turns out the world already knew about it, and my plans to make trillions of dollars was a bust. But, it is still a very interesting way to drink coffee. It is ultra light roasted coffee. The color of the coffee ends up light brown and looks somewhere between coffee and tea (hence my cooler name). The density of the bean is severe and you get more grounds per tablespoon so more caffeine. This density is also a huge problem for grinders. My blender could just barely grind these bean without overheating and burning out. You will need a very robust grinder if you plan to make this stuff. Or sneak it into Costco and grind it on your way out (don't do that, it is probably illegal or something).
Equipment List
- Green coffee beans
- 3lbs for $20-ish in Amazon
- Cast iron skillet
- Coleman Burner + propane fuel canister + lighter/matches
- $40 on Amazon
- Wooden or metal spatula, whisk or spoon (to stir but not melt)
- Cooling tray: Lasagna pan or cookie sheet with an edge
- Hotpads: grab a bunch, skillet gets hot (2 minimum)
- Hand fan if you have one (if not, carry on I have never used one, just seems handy)
Let's Get Roasting
- This is a smokey, smelly and messy process, so the backyard is best (not inside)
- Light the propane burner and get the skillet hot
- Pour in a single layer of green coffee beans
- You need to stir constantly, go slow in the first 5 minutes, not much happens
- What will happen:
- Green beans will turn yellow /tan with few darker ones
- Dump them into your cooling pan
- Wait for them to cool, can fan here if you wish
- Grind the beans in a STRONG blender or grinder
- Put in airtight jar or other container
- Or put in small plastic sealable bags and small burlap sacks as gifts
- Enjoy!
